East becomes Central is a collaborative effort of five journalism students at the University of Texas to examine the changes that have been, and still are, occurring on the east side of Austin, Texas.

The goal of East becomes Central is to represent a diverse group of East Austin businesses and residents, while providing an outlet for the sometimes clashing views about gentrification in Austin.

As the producers of the multimedia content, we do not intend to favor either end of the spectrum in the judgment of East Austin’s changing socialscape. The videos, slide shows and pictures are meant to inform and facilitate discussion about gentrification, a phenomenon that is occurring in cities around the United States.
